Our Chase Tops Process

1

Inspection

We inspect your existing chase top condition, check for interior water damage, and take precise measurements of the chase dimensions.

2

Assessment

We check the chase interior for water damage, rotted framing, or mold that should be addressed before the new top is installed.

3

Fabrication

Your new chase top is custom-fabricated from heavy-gauge stainless steel or copper with proper drainage slopes and drip edges.

4

Installation

The new chase top is professionally fitted, sealed, and secured. A matching cap or storm collar completes the flue penetration.

About Our Chase Tops Service

If your home has a prefabricated (factory-built) fireplace, your chimney chase is topped with a metal cover called a chase top or chase cover. This is one of the most failure-prone components on Long Island homes, and a failed chase top causes some of the most expensive water damage we see.

The problem is simple: most builder-installed chase tops are made from galvanized steel, a material that cannot withstand Long Island's salt air environment. Within 10-15 years, the galvanized coating breaks down, the steel rusts through, and water pours directly into the wood-framed chase. By the time you notice stains on the ceiling, the damage inside the chase can be significant.

Capstone Chimney replaces failing galvanized chase tops with custom-fabricated stainless steel or copper chase covers that will never rust. Every chase top we build is:

- Custom-measured to fit your specific chase dimensions precisely - Fabricated from heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel or copper - Formed with proper cross-break reinforcement to prevent oil-canning and water pooling - Sloped for positive drainage away from the flue penetration - Finished with 1.5-inch drip edges on all sides to prevent water from running down the chase siding - Sealed at the flue penetration with a storm collar and high-temperature sealant

Before installing a new chase top, we always inspect the chase interior for existing water damage. If we find rotted framing, mold, or saturated insulation, we'll document it and recommend necessary repairs before sealing the chase with a new top. It makes no sense to cap a chase that already has damage inside.

Our stainless steel chase tops carry a lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion—a warranty that's realistic because stainless steel genuinely doesn't corrode in our coastal environment. Stop replacing galvanized tops every decade and invest in a permanent solution from Capstone Chimney.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our chase tops service

A chase top (or chase cover) is the metal lid that sits on top of a prefabricated (factory-built) chimney chase. Unlike masonry chimneys that have a concrete crown, prefab chimneys have a wood-framed chase covered by a metal top. This top is your chase's primary defense against water entry.
Most factory-installed chase tops are made from galvanized steel, which is not rated for coastal environments. Long Island's salt air corrodes the galvanized coating within 10-15 years, after which the steel rapidly rusts through. Once it starts rusting, water pours into the chase, damaging framing, insulation, and interior finishes.
Look for rust stains running down the sides of your chimney chase (visible from the ground), water stains on the ceiling near the chimney, rust-colored water in the firebox, or a visible dip/dent in the chase top where water is pooling. Any of these signs mean replacement is likely needed.
We recommend 304 stainless steel for most Long Island installations. It's impervious to salt air corrosion, structurally strong, and carries a lifetime warranty. Copper is a premium option that provides the same protection with a distinctive aesthetic. Never install another galvanized chase top on Long Island.
